Maria lives in a small apartment in East Los Angeles, a mostly Latino neighborhood where “machismo” plays a major role in the social construct of the area. The environment informs the character and the story; the outer world in collision with Maria’s inner world. The story begins the day Maria gets evicted from her apartment, from her own Latino community and forced to the streets with her daughter. Already under a child services investigation inflicted by her landlord, Maria has to secure a promotion at her current job or find a second one in order to afford a place to live and avoid any red flags with the social worker handling her case. Accomplishing this, represents a merely impossible task due to the extremely low possibilities a transwoman of color has of getting a job in Los Angeles. Although Alex thrives academically at school, she is having trouble with the other kids. It all comes crashing down when Alex’s teacher, fueled by her transphobia, questions Maria’s ability to care for her daughter, and calls in child services. When the custody of her daughter is put at stake, Maria is pushed to confront her relationship with the world, the connection with her daughter, and her suppressed insecurities while fighting to keep her family together.
